Henderson wins bowls

Sam Henderson (U.FJS.) has won the 1981 Canterbury fours indoor bowls title. He beat A. Spicer (Somerfieid), 15-7. in a final that was far closer than the score revealed. After eight ends the scores were tied at 6-6 and Henderson held only a 9-7 advantage at the completion of the eleventh end. Spicer, trying fbr a tap back on the final end. killed and eventually lost a further single on the replay. Henderson has been playing indoor bowls since well before the provincial association was formed — but this was his first Canterbury title though he was beaten in a singles final about 10 years ago. He was ably assisted bv Frank Perham, Colin Pratt, and Paul Berkerley. The four had some decisive wins, beating B. Chapman. 14-1. and R. Terras, 13-5, but in both the third round and the quarter-finals won only by a single point, 7-6. Results:— Third round—A. Spicer 7. E. Ashby 6; B. Tomlinson 7, D. Earl 4; B. Chapman 9, D.
