Canty posts big score
PA Whangarei For the second consecutive night, heavy rain fell over Whangarei, which made conditions very difficult at the Adidas Newman national men’s hockey tournament on the fourth day yesterday. However, the trying conditions did not stop Auckland and Canterbury posting big scores in their Challenge Shield matches. In one of the main games of the day, Auckland’s Arthur Parkin scored three secondhalf goals to help his side along to a 5-0 win over Manawatu. Manawatu, which lost its
chance of reaching the semifinals on Tuesday, was never in the game, although it did make valiant attempts to score from its few penalty corners. Canterbury’s George Carnoutsos set his side going with three goals in its 7-0 thrashing of Hawke’s Bay, and Wellington had its best game of the tournament, beating South Canterbury, 30. In the other Challenge Shield match, Northland beat Wanganui, 1-0, to virtually secure a place in the semifinals with Auckland, Canterbury and Wellington.
