No surprises in K Cup hockey

PA Palmerston North Section play at the national women’s hockey tournament in Palmerston North was completed yesterday, with no surprises in the top K Cup division. Hawke’s Bay had a late afternoon game against Canterbury B, winning, 3-1, while Eastern Southland A, the team which held the Bay to a tight 1-all draw on Tuesday, managed to hold off a strong Waikato combination, 1-0. Waikato has yet to win a game at this tournament but played its best match of the week so far yesterday. The Waikato goalie, Sue Emerson, prevented an early Eastern goal with a confident clearing kick to the sideline after Eastern’s New Zealand representative, Catherine Thompson, had made a burst down field. „

The solitary goal was scored by Annette Tulloch, after the simplest of runs through Waikato’s defence.

Auckland, with its captain, Judy Dowling, in the side for the first time at the tourna-

ment, again had the opportunities to beat Otago in the first game of the day but try as it did, and it surely tried, the equaliser wouldn't come. Auckland lost, 1-2. And in the fourth K Cup match, Wellington was toally outclassed, 4-1, by a slick Canterbury combination. Canterbury made a very positive beginning and forced several corners in the first ten minutes of play, one shot hitting the post. The only goal of the half came when Leeanne Doig ran strongly down the right wing and passed back for Judy Phillips to finish off. Canterbury’s forwards were well supported on attack by Robyn Blackman, who was also very fast to cover on defence. Anthea Feaver defended soundly against Wellington’s right flank from where most of their breaks originated. In the second half, goals came regularly. Miss Phillips made it 2-0 with a fine corner shot into the left of the net.

The third goal came from

a fine manoeuvring run through the centre by Miss Blackman, who jinked her way from side to side and finished off with a fine goal. Wellington narrowed the margin with a superbly taken penalty stroke by Karen Brown, but Miss Phillips widened the margin to 41 with another well-timed corner shot.

Canterbury B began its match tremendously well and had Hawke’s Bay turning and defending consistently for 15 minutes. Several corners were conceded, but no goals resulted. Against' the run of play, Hawke’s Bay broke down field through the centre and the right wing, Leslie Monk, netted.

The Bay came back soon after to make it 2-0 when Harena Kohere broke loose in Canterbury’s circle. She made it 3-0 soon after halftime.

Canterbury assumed control for the final 20 minutes of the game. Constant pressure on Hawke’s Bay’s goal finally brought results.
