Canterbury women dispose of Auckland
PA Palmerston North Canterbury kept its K Cup hopes alive by comfortably accounting for the dangerous Auckland combination on the second day of the national women’s hockey championships in Palmerston North yesterday. Canterbury, as was the case on Monday against Otago, was again slow to start but then hit form in impressive fashion and kept Auckland pinned in its own half. This open game was a fine spectacle of attractive, skilful hockey, reports a special correspondent. The pace was fast throughout and both teams used a full area of the field. Canterbury lead, 1-0, at half-time, when Nicky Sherriff’s corner shot was steered in by Leeanne Doig. Canterbury was then forced to defend a series of corners but finally broke back and probed at Auckland’s defence until several breakthroughs were achieved. The second goal came when Judy Phillips cleverly carved her way through
Auckland’s defence and placed the ball beyond the goalie for Miss Doig to finish off. Chris McAuley, at left back for • Canterbury, broke down many Auckland attacks. At left-half, Anthea Feaver had a great tussle with Auckland’s speedy right wing, Jan Martin, coming out the winner. Auckland’s attack was spearheaded by its centre forward, Cheryl Law. A young, determined Eastern Southland A side pulled off the main upset of the day. In what many expected to be a one-sided match, the gritty Southerners held last year’s joint K Cup winner, Hawke’s Bay, to a 1-all draw. Eastern, a team capable of causing surprises whenever it takes the field, did a good job blocking the gaps when Hawke’s Bay threatened. But it was the Bay which scored first, Shelley Hiha setting up the goal after a penalty corner. Eastern reacted quickly, bouncing back on attack. Just minutes after the Bay goal, Shona Elder crashed home the equaliser. Although the Bay con-
tinued to pressure Eastern, its defence held firm. In another K Cup match, Waikato, following on from its Monday thrashing by Hawke’s Bay, drew with Canterbury B in a goal-less encounter. Both sides had their scoring opportunities but could not capitalise. Results.— Section A (K Cup) Hawke’s Bay 1, Eastern Southland A 1: Waikato 0, Canterbury B 0; Canterbury A 2 (L.
