Use of batons
Sir.—M. Bush (August 19) talks about barbaric acts of protesters. Mr Blazey earlier mentioned that he was sickened at the mentality of New Zealanders who will drop fishhooks on a rugby field. Both forget to mention that these acts were performed in front of crowds of rugby supporters and. as such, can hardly be seen as anything more than delaying tactics. I am more disturbed at the mentality of rugby players who can cheer when they see people batoned by police. At Saturday’s test match, the police, by virtue of superior numbers, could have removed protesters without resorting to violence. I am amazed at the hypocrisy of rugby supporters who will watch Springboks and All Blacks brawling during a game, cheer when they see protesters batoned and then go home and accuse protesters of barbarism. New Zealanders should question their consciences about the sources of violence surrounding this tour.—Yours, etc., . Ms N. TAYLOR. . August 19, 1981.
