Object of protest
Sir,—lt was my understanding that the object of the protest march held in Christchurch on Saturday was to oppose apartheid and to object to the presence in Christchurch of the Springbok team. However. from “The Press." August 17, I quote Mr David Small, coordinator for all protests: “This is the first time we have ever done anything without the police knowing about it . . . We just made sure that they had to leave a lot of policemen at each place." It would seem from those comments that the protesters are more interested in conflict with the 1 police than the issues they state.—Yours, etc.,
. JOAN SPACKMAN August 17, 1981.
