son sprawling under an avalanche of hooves. Carson was run over by at least half the field as he lay on the turf. The American jockey, Steve Cauthen, said, “Willie is lucky to have come out of it alive. It was the worst fall I have ever seen. The horses galloped right over him.” Carson was rushed to York
District Hospital, after being examined by the Jockey I Club’s chief medical officer, i Dr Michael Allen, who said, ; “Carson has fractured the j base of his skull, and has ! also injured a wrist.” i Dr Allen entered Carson in i his book as, “out for three I months,” the. statutory en- { forced period in the case of i severe head injuries. - i
