Chess finalists
Shirley A. not without difficulty, beat Ashburton, 3G--2"/2, in the final preliminary round of "The Press" schools' chess competition and qualified to meet Christchurch A in the grand final of the A grade at Cobham Intermediate tomorrow evening.
St Andrew’s beat Mairehau. 4 1/ 2-l 1 /z, and that allowed Linwood to qualify for the play-off for third and fourth. Mairehau needed to score 2'/a points to finish fourth in the preliminary competition. In the B grade, Papanui won its last two section one matches easily and will play Christ’s College in the final of the $250 tournament. Final results:-
A grade.— Shirley A 3 l a, Ashburton 2G: St Andrew's A 4G.
