Children ‘strike’ over buses
PA Auckland Waiheke Island schoolchildren yesterday went on strike because of the island’s seven-week bus dispute. They marched round inhabited parts of the island yesterday protesting about the lack of school transport. Their spokesman, Shane Williams, aged 13, said they were tired of walking to school. About 50 children, according to Shane, marched through Oneroa, Little Oneroa, and Surfdale, with banners that said: “No bus, no school” and “Sore feet.”
“We are trying to get the buses back. If it does not work we will have at least
tried to do something,” said Shane. He said the marchers had the permission of parents and the support of many islanders. “Even the police said we could march, as long as we stayed on the footpath,” he said. . The children are not sure about what will happen to them when they return to school, but the intention is to march again today, with other islanders possibly joining in. The dispute centres on the dismissal of a school bus driver after an accident and union insistence that he be reinstated.
