Union tour decision
The Canterbury Cleaners. Caretakers. Watchmen, and Lift Attendants’ Union resolved at a meetihg of its board of management on July 29 to give full support to any member “who through conscience or personal safety leaves his place of employment during any threat of confrontation at or near a member's place of employment during the current Springbok tour." The decision will leave the way clear for security guards in the union to refiise to join patrols at Lancaster Park or other venues where there is a possibility of confrontation. The security committee of the union had earlier decided that no duty should be carried out by foot patrols or static guards at the park or at any alternative venue, but Securitas guards directly involved saw the committee's decision as interfering With their right to decide when they would work. the latest decision recognises that right but provides union protection for members who choose not to work when there is a question of conscience or safety.
