Changes from gas
About 50 consumers in the Heathcote County Council’s areas had to switch from gas to electricity for household use, the council's electrical engineer (Mr I. R. Densem) told the electricity committee last evening. However, for some it would not be a big change, because they had used only a small amount of gas. “About 35 had gas ranges for water heating,” he said. Only small increases in electricity loads have been noted as a result of the conversions.
The gas company had helped to assist the council to deal with the consumers, he said. The conversion of the Princess Margaret and Coronation Hospitals are the main consumers remaining. An item relating to that was taken in committee. In May, it was revealed that the council had offered the North Canterbury Hospital Board a discount if it agreed to the conversion. The council was worried that other energy sources could be considered.
