Appeal to P.M.

PA Auckland The Labour Party presidenty (Mr J. P. Anderton) has appealed to the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) to invite the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Rowling) to today’s Springbok tour talks. It was “unfortunately typical” of Mr Muldoon that Mr Rowling had not been invited to the meeting, he said. "Mr Rowling last week took the initiative to convene a meeting of church and civic leaders to which he invited the Acting Prime Minister (Mr Maclntyre).

“What everyone should be desperate to’ achieve is a political consensus which the attendance of Mr Rowling at this meeting would indicate.”

Instead, said Mr Anderton, the Prime Minister gave the impression of playing politics with the issue during the National Party’s annual conference in Wellington. "I appeal to Mr Muldoon, even at this late stage, to broaden the base of this meeting by calling for the Leader of the Opposition to join him for these discussions."
