Apartheid opposed, police backed

PA < Wellington National Party memners decided at their conference yesterday to pass a four-part remit on the Springbok tour.

The remit was introduced late in the conference by the president of the party. Mr G. A. Chapman. It opposes apartheid and the repression of human rights, acknowledges the rights of protesters. opposes the suppression of lawful activities, reaffirms the need to maintain law and order, and expresses support for and confidnece in the police. A Wellington representative. Mr Julian, Watts, spoke first to the remit after Mr Chapman said that several amendments had been proposed and that he would not accept any of' them.

Mr Watts said that the remit was framed carefully to reflect the mood of the conference and deliberately avoided the use of emotive words. ■

The tour had brought a classic clash of freedoms, Mr Watts said. He asked the conference to help heal the division in the country. Delegates heard other speeches, including some expressing strong opposition to protesters.
