N.Z. yachts ninth

NZPA correspondent Cowles. Isle of Wight

New Zealand’s Admiral's Cup yachting team remained in ninth place in the standings yesterday after a disappointing showing in the 220-mile English Channel race.

lan Gibb’s Swuzzlebubble finished a fine third on corrected time for the New Zealanders, but their hopes of making ground on the leading contenders in this, the first of the two offshore races, were dashed by the thirtv-

first and fortieth placings of Wee Willie Winkie and Inca respectively. With one 30-mile onshore race, also the 600-mile Fastnet race still to be sailed. New Zealand has 290 points, 131 behind Great Britain, the chief beneficiaries of the Channel race.

The French boat Midnight Sun took both line honours (33hrs 30min 21sec) and handicap honours in the race, but British boats were placed fourth, seventh and fourteenth on corrected time.
