Air pollution

Sir,—l find it incredible that so much pressure is being put on people for fluoridating the water at such expense, and yet very little is being done for the elimination of the increasing pollution we are being subjected to. Perhaps Dr Fahey

should turn his attentions in this direction, thereby saving lives rather than teeth. Surely he has his priorities wrong? It is in everyone’s interests to have pollution-free breathing, when one considers the large amount of money being directed to the respiratory units of our hospitals which are trying to repair tne damage caused to these unfortunate people. Anyone having seen an asthmatic in the throes of an attack would not need convincing. — Yours, etc.,

D. E. VAN BREE. July 24, 1981.

Finance Ministers’ conference

Sir,—As regards the cancellation of the Commonwealth Finance Ministers’ conference; I trust that the cost to the taxpayer caused by this cancellation will be met by the New Zealand Rugby Football Union, out of the tour profits. May I also suggest that they pay or contribute towards our illustrious Prime Minister’s visit to the United States and the Royal wedding. This trip does after all get him out of the way while the rest of us remain to face the consequences of his incompetence. Yours, etc., R. P. FIELD. July 23, 1981.
