PA Hamilton The abandonment of Saturday’s Springbok game without a rugby kick being made because of the invasion of the pitch by demonstrators was an “unprecedented situation" in international rugby, according to a rugby historian. Rod Chester. He said that there were

numerous demonstrations during the Springbok tours of the British Isles in 1969-70 and of Australia in 1971. But this was the first time a game had to be abandoned because of a riot, without a ball being kicked in the history of international rugby. “This is something new and it's unfortunate," Mr Chester said.
