Jump in butter trade with Russia

Wellington reporter The value of butter sales to Russia has increased; ten-, fold in the last three years to more than $4l million at present. Figures supplied by the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Maclntyre) show that in 1978 the only dairy products exported from New Zealand to Russia were 4000 tonnes of butter valued at $4.04 million.

By 1979 butler exports to Russia had risen to 22,446 tonnes valued at $25.39 million and New Zealand also exported 1900 tonnes of milk powder valued at $1.63 million to that country; Butter sales to Russia last year increased to 33,165 tonnes valued at $41.42 million; milk powder exports increased to 6017 tonnes valued at $7.32 million; and a further $9O was realised through the sale of 60kg of cheese.
