Railwaymen go back to work

The strike by more than 150 railwaymen in Christchurch ended about 4 p.m. yesterday when.the Railways management and the National Union of Railwaymen reached agreement on a formula to end the strike, which began about 11 a.m. on Tuesday and led to the cancellation of more than 30 goods trains. The assistant district traffic. manager of the Railways Department, in Christchurch, Mr D. J. Bradley, said that the parties had agreed to

appoint an arbitrator to investigate the union’s grievances, which include the non-issue of some new uniforms and the non-payment of wages while staff were on strike about the uniforms on two days last week. The two strikes have left a big backlog of waggons to be cleared. The Cook Strait ferries continued to run during the strike, but ferries on the Picton to Wellington run carried only small amounts of freight.
