Island fuel crisis

Wellington reporter Fuel stocks on the Chatham Islands are so low that the Navy has ben called on to deliver emergency supplies. H.M.N.Z.S. Taranaki left Auckland at 1.30 p.m. yesterday and is expected to arrive at the Chathams at dawn on Wednesday. The shortage has arisen because the Holmdale, which takes supplies to the Chathams, is on its 20-year survey, according to the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Highet). The ship last visited the Chathams at the end of April. It had been expected that the ship would be back in service by June 12, but the survey had proved to be a long business, he said. It was hoped that the ship would be off the slips at Nelson in a few days and back on its run by the end of June or early July.

No other ship had been available to take supplies to the Chathams. The Navy had been called-on and had been able to help, Mr Highet said.
