Plea for Baha’is
The Christchurch and New Zealand Baha'i communities have sent cablegrams to the United Nations asking for an investigation of the persecution of Baha’is in Iran. Baha’is say that their holy shrines in Iran have been confiscated, prominent Baha'is arrested, and membership of the religion made a criminal offence. Seven Baha’is were executed in Ramadan. Iran, on June 14., The cablegrams asked the Secretary-General of the United Nations (Dr Kurt Waldheim) to set up a special commission to investigate the persecution. It also asked Dr Waldheim to take action to stop the “oppression and violence against what is the largest nonpolitical religious minority in Iran.”
