Sextant sold for $25,000

NZPA London A brass sextant from New Zealand, reputed to have been used by Captain Cook, has been sold at Sotheby's for $24,970. The 38cm sextant was believed to have been one of the four sextants taken by Cook on this third voyage in 1776-80, on which he was killed. It was sent for sale at Sotheby’s by Mr and'Mrs J. Opperman, of Tauranga; who were given the instrument by a Berkshire couple, in June, 1947. on the eve of their departure from England to New Zealand. ‘ It had been kept in its original box to which a slip was attached saying it went with. Captain Cook “on his voyage of discovery circa 1770.” '' ■■ ■ It was bought -by a Brigh-, ton dealer. Sotheby’s’ had 'estimated it would fetch' between $ll,OOO and $lB,OOO.
