Lake’s exclusion ‘incredible’
Wellington reporter The Minister of Lands (Mr V. S. Young) has been asked' to explain why .Lake Christabel hnd its surrounds have been excluded from the proposed Lewis Pass National Reserve. This exclusion became knowm after a public meeting where conservationists were givem an outline of the proposals by an officer of the Department of Lands and Survey. It was an incredible situation, said the secretary of Action for Environment (Mrs H. Rainforth). "To propose a national reserve while leaving out the scenic gem of the area is somewhat like proposing a national reserve in the Mount Cook region but excluding Mount Cook,” she said. The national park qualities of the Lake Christabel area were well recognised, so it should definitely be included in the proposed national reserve — notwithstanding the obvious inter-departmental rivalry on the issue, she said.
