Incident sours soccer
A last-minute incident soured. Stop Outs 2-1 Adidas Chatham Cup win over National Mutual Miramar at the Basin Reserve yesterday. Miramar had a goal disallowed in the last seconds which would have forced the game into extra time, and striker Costa Leonidas was cautioned after the match for comments to a' linesman. Stop Out deserved its victory, however, with a fine second half performance •which saw it score twice in the first eight minutes of the second half. Takapuna City's dreams of repeating last year’s effort when they went through to the semi-finals of the Chatham Cup were dashed at Taharoto Park,.. ■ Auckland, yesterday when they were beaten 1-0 by the northern soccer league side Ellerslie. Takapuna joined National ; Mutual Miramar as the only two Rothmans League sides to bow out of the Adidas Chatham Cup. Miramar were, like Takapuna, beaten at home. Hanimex North Shore United, one of a number of former cup-winners to survive, coasted to an easy win over Rotorua City and threw out a warning that they may well be in contention until the final. Manurewa, scored, through Mark Armstrong, twice early in the second spell to eliminate Birkenhead United. Birkenhead held Manurewa to just one goal at half-time in the game yesterday but Armstrong’s goals took the former winners to a ■ clear lead. The home side hit' back with a couple of goals only to have Greg Hough steer Manurewa through with a late goal. Mt Wellington, defending the trophy they won so well last season, began hesitantly with a 3-2 win over Waitemata City yesterday. Upset by some refereeing decisions early on, Mt Wellington were rocked when Doug Mclntosh was just wide,with an early chance and Terry Fels put the northern league side into a 1-0 nineteenth miriiite lead.
Stung, Mt Wellington, hit back with three' goals in a seven-minute burst — the first two by. the in-form Billy McClure — sunk City. They did however hit back with the only second-half goal to close to 2-3 at the finish. Bays-was handicapped by the withdrawal of five key players through injury, and never looked likely to break through the tight Hamilton defence. Gisborne City beat Napier City Rovers 3-1 in a Chatham Cup match at Gisborne yesterday.
