Don Greig wins cross-country run easily
Don Greig (New Brighton) won the men's Holloway cross-coun-try race for the third year in succession when the event was held at McLean's Island on Saturday. In his first competition in the Canterbury cross-country season since having been injured at the world cross-country championships in Spain, Greig won the 16 km men's event easily in 52min' 31s.
Greig and Neil Lowsley (New Brighton) were running shoulder to shoulder at the end of the first of the four laps. At the end of lap two Dave Burridge (University) was level with Greig but Burridge pulled out, having used the two laps as a time trial. Lowsley then was in third place but began to fade. Mel Radcliffe (New Brighton) ran strongly to finish in second place in 53’min 10s after having been in sixth place at the halfway mark. Richard Sprott (University) who was in fourth place after two laps, finished third in 53min 245.
The University club scooped the pool in the. women's section, gaining the first four places in the eight km. two-lap event.
Wendy Mollison, in her first cross-country competition for the season, was happy with her performance after only five weeks of training, having" been out of contention before that because of injury.
Mollison and a team-mate, Anne-Marie Keown, were running together at the end of the first lap, with the Tipper twins, Debbie and Lynne, in third and fourth places respectively. However, at the end of the final lap Mollisort had pulled ahead to win in 29min 245, with Debbie Tipper in second place and Keown in third place. Among the veteran men, Bryan Atkins (United) stood out. He’ was the fourth-fastest finisher
in the men's 16 km event and was the first veteran home in 54min 225. He was well clear of the second place-getter, Vic Sykes (Christchurch). John Macdonald finished third.
Pauline Woolman (Olympic) won the womens veteran’s race over eight km in 34min 7s.
