South African policies

Sir,-As May 31 is South Africa’s Republic day, it is worth reflecting on what South Africans have to celebrate. Black Africans can look forward to continuing living in a society which judges and sentences them to permanent inferiority because of the colour of their skin, and the land of their birth. Black Africans represent cheap labour. Coloureds and Asians can look forward' to remaining a landless and politically impotent minority. Coloureds and Asians represent a possible buffer between whites and black Africans. Whites can look forward to the many manifestations of “black consciousness.” They will, always live in fear of revolution because of the grossly unfair system of racial discrimination, called apartheid. Whites represent suppression by force. “All South Africans interpret the ’Bl tour as an acceptance of apartheid” (Archbishop Hurley of Durban). — Yours, etc., GRAEME R. YARD- # LEY. May 28, 1981.
