Lighthouse move slated

PA Wellington Two Labour members of Parliament yesterday joined in condemning the continuation of a committee of inquiry into the tiemanning of lighthouses while automation is proceeding regardless of the committee’s deliberations. They are the Shadow Minister of Transport, Mr F. M. Colman, and the Shadow Minister of Labour, Mr T. K. Burke. They said that if the Government was serious about the outcome of the inquiry it would have stopped demanning lighthouses until the committee made its'findings known. Mr Colman said that lighthouse keepers had been involved in 14 search-and-res-cue incidents last year and that this underlined a need for manned lighthouses.
