Explosion inquiry continues

Investigations into the fatal accident at Anderson’S Engineering in Hillsborough on May 14 are continuing. Two men died when an acetylene gas cylinder exploded. Two inquiries are being held — by the Labour Department and by New Zealand Industrial Gases, which employed the men. The Labour Department, working in liaison with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, does not expect to come to any conclusion for at least another three weeks.

Industrial Gases has brought out a specialist consultant from Australia, an employee of its parent body, 8.0. C. International, to assist in the evaluation of the gas cylinders.

The regional manager of Industrial Gases. Mr I. K. Lindsay, said that 250 bottles imported from Britain in the same batch as the one which exploded had been withdrawn from .. service for evaluation. There was no question of any brand’s being withdrawn, he said.
