Gas not threatened

Christchurch’s gas supply will not be cut off if gas workers carry out their threat to strike in two weeks, said the secretary of the Gas Workers’ Union, Mr G. G. Walker, last evening.

Mr Walker said the gas workers felt a responsibility to maintain the supply because The Princess Margaret Hospital still used gas.

The Gas Workers’ Union has told the Christchurch Gas Company that all 40 hour-a-week workers employed in non-essential areas not involved in gas produc-

tion will strike from Tuesday.

The company's refusal to reopen redundancy negotiations had prompted the decision to take direct action, said Mr Walker. If the strike went ahead, it would be the first at the works for 100 years.

The general manager of the Christchurch Gas Company, Mr C. W. S. Kennedy, declined to comment on the situation last evening. He said he had been away in Wellington and would rhakf a statement when he ha> brought himself “up with th play.” .
