Shipping news New container records set

The Lyttelton container terminal set a number of new records this week in exchanging containers aboard the 43.995-ton cellularcontainer ship Mairangi Bay. The ship arrived in port on May 25 and sailed yesterday after having loaded and unloaded more than 1600 containers.

The gross rate of container handling, according to the manager of the terminal, Captain P. G. Morgan, was between 25 and 26 per hour, which figure would have been higher if the terminal had not had to wait for the • arrival of about 400 containers. It was the biggest number of containers exchanged aboard any ship at the Lyttelton terminal, he said, and also included the biggest number of refrigerated containers to be loaded aboard one ship at the terminal. A total of 530 refrigerated containers with lamb for the United KingdomEuropean market were loaded aboard the Mairangi Bay, representing about 6360 tonnes of meat.
