Butcher warned

Legal action may be taken against s a Colombo Street butchery, by the Christchurch City Council if offensive smells are not stopped. Three public complaints were made about Harvey’s Butchery in April and May, the council’s health and general committee, was told yesterday.

During the most recent episode, on May 13, offensive smells were noticed throughout the area on the eastern side of the premises. It was discovered that fat rendering equipment had been left on all night and had overheated. Because the ventilation unit had been turned off. the smell of burnt fat had been discharged into the air.

The butchery had drawn an earlier complaint, in 1978, and had been told to complete all fat rendering and cooking by 7 a.m. each day. Nuisance abatement work had been done after the most recent complaints, and councillors said there should be no further reasons for offending odours. If they recurred, the matter would be referred for legal action without further notice.
