Disabled voice concern

PA Wellington Disabled people yesterday expressed their concern . to Parliament about discrimination against them in New Zealand society. In a three-page petition, they called on the Government to draw up legislation protecting their rights, and asked that a Minister for the Disabled be appointed, “in recognition that people' with disabilities have the same aspirations and needs as those who are considered to be able-bodies.” Such an .appointment could also ensure that the benefits and services for the disabled were provided as a co-ordi-nated strategy and anomalies were overcome, especially in the provision of benefits, said Messrs Bruce Burgess and Edward Gray in a petition presented to Parliament by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Highet). The petitioners are the organisers of Project Bebe, ‘which was designed to focus New Zealand's attention on the problems of the disabled in the year set aside by the United Nations Deciration on the Rights of Disabled Persons.

In the Speech from the Throne yesterday. the Government announced that it was considering legislation to deal with the rights of disabled people.
