The Labour Parly’s plans to establish another carpet industry in New Zealand were criticised by two

Government members. Mr R. McD. Gray (Nat., Clutha) said that the proposal was an election gimmick. He questioned the need for warehouse establishments in the United States, where sales promotion was now pursued by the industry. The Undersecretary of Trade and Industry (Mr Allen) said that Labour’s policy to create 16. new carpet factories would lead to a stockpile of excess carpet and would threaten jobs in the industry.
