M.P.s quick to act
PA Wellington .Members of Parliament wasted no time in promoting their own policies or attacking those of their political opponents when Parliament opened yesterday. A number of members presented notices of motion touching on ' matters of pelIC 'Mr lan McLean (Nat., Tarawera) noted the encouraging improvement in New Zealand’s balance of
payments but Mr R. J. Tizard (Lab., Otahuhu) deplored the Government’s policy of continued -heavy borrowing. A former Minister of Police, Mr M. A. Connelly (Lab., Wigram) attacked the Government for failing to approve any increase in sworn police .in 1980-81 and for '.failing to deal with increased crime and violence. The Labour Parly’s plans to establish another carpet industry in New Zealand were criticised by two
Government members. Mr R. McD. Gray (Nat., Clutha) said that the proposal was an election gimmick. He questioned the need for warehouse establishments in the United States, where sales promotion was now pursued by the industry. The Undersecretary of Trade and Industry (Mr Allen) said that Labour’s policy to create 16. new carpet factories would lead to a stockpile of excess carpet and would threaten jobs in the industry.
