Selection starts for N.Z. team
The initial step in the selection process of the New Zealand women’s golf team to play Australia for the Tasman Cup at Southport, Queensland, will be.taken, at Shirley on Sunday and'Monday. ' Six players from each island will contest the annual inter-island match over 54 holes of stroke competition, the worst score being deleted from both teams in each round.
The golfer with the best gross over the three rounds will win the Susan Grigg Rose Bowl. At the end of the match, which is sponsored by Dunlop (N.Z.) Sports, a national squad will be announced for further trials at Gisborne on June 20 and 21 from which the New Zealand side will be chosen.
The inter-island match has been held for the last four
years and the South Island is still seeking its first success, although it came so close in 1978 when only one stroke separated the two teams. In 1979, the North Island won in a canter by 49 strokes and last year it was clear by 24 shots at the finish. The contest should prove much closer this year. The teams are.—
North Island: Mrs' Rhodes, Kaylene Burns (Hawke's - BayPoverty Bay), Karrin Young, Jocelyn Glarifield, Cherry ; Kingham. Kaye Maxwell (all . Auckland). Miss Young, who recently won the national junior women’s title, replaces Viv Fraher (Bay of Plenty-Thames Valley), who was not available.
South Island: Mrs Douglas, Miss Scandrett.'Sue Bishop, Adrienne Bond (both Canterbury), Melanie Irvine (Otago), Debbie Randelf (Nelson). Reserve: Jenny Kellahan (South Canterbury).
Two rounds will be played on Sunday and the final 18 holes on Monday morning.
