Soccer scouting parties

PA Auckland International soccer is starting to take notice of New Zealand’s spectacular progress through the Oceania qualifying rounds for the 1982 World Cup. New Zealand’s next cup game — against Taiwan at Mt Smart Stadium tomorrow — will be watched by scouting parties from Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

New Zealand will play •these two countries, plus

China, in a final qualifying round for the cup finals in Spain if it takes three points from its last two Oceania games,-against Taiwan and Fiji. The Kuwait party will be led by Sheikh Ahmed AlSabah, and Saudi Arabia will be represented by its general secretary, Othman Al-Saad. Both countries, want top level talks on how and where the final qualifying round games will be played, if New Zealand makes it through.

Kuwait and Saudi Arabia apparently favour a tournament in a neutral country, but New Zealand, directed by its manager, John Adshead, and coach, Kevin Fallon, is firmly in favour of home-and-away games.

The cup campaign so far has produced four wins and two draws in six starts, leaving New Zealand a clear favourite to progress through to the final qualifying rounds.
