Youth training
Sir,—l was pleased to learn that the Canterbury-Westland divisional conference of the National Party adopted, the resolution asking that all young people be required to take Outward Bound-type training at the age of 18. Your editorial of May 26 suggests that compelling young people to participate is misguided and forcing them into any activity will probably leave them “turned off.” I do not believe this. It is time that our young New Zealanders had organised training, and it is lime to put a stop to this nonsense that unless we voluntarily become involved we will not enjoy or benefit from participating in an activity. The.training being suggested' is designed to encourage pride in oneself and in our nation — attitudes which are badly needed. To be effective this type of training must be compulsory.—Yours, etc., C. ANDERSON (Mrs), Rangiora. May 27, 1981.
