Dead baby found in bag
PA Auckland The Auckland police have begun an inquiry into the death of a baby whose body was found in a plastic bag on the edge of the Panmure Lagoon. Although a post-mortem examination indicated there was no reason to believe the baby died by violent means, the police were still treating the death as suspicious.
Detective-Inspector B. Matthews, of the Auckland Criminal Investigation Branch, said he was interested in hearing from anyone who knew a Polynesian woman who was pregnant and had given birth, but the child was “not around?* A boy discovered the body about 4.30 p.m. yesterday, 100 m from the Panmure Lagoon Yacht Club.
The baby was a female Polynesian and had been wrapped in pillow cases and a towel and then placed in a plastic bag. Although the afterbirth and umbilical cord were still attached it appeared the infant had been breathing for a few minutes before it died. Mr Matthews said two of the Pillowcases were marked with “M. Stephen. A,“ in ink.
