Food litter problem
Bigger rubbish bins will be placed along Riccarton Road in an attempt to beat a litter problem caused by fast-food outlets in the .area.
A report on the litter problem to the Riccarton Borough Council this week recommended the larger bins. The council approved the recommendation.
The report was made after a councillor had complained that too much rubbish was dropped along the road. Some councillors felt that the best way to keep the road free of 'litter would be to employ council staff to clean it on Sundays.
"A lot of littering has occurred at the week-ends but it is not council policy to have staff working on Sundays,” said Cr G. R. Marriner.
The council approved Cr D. A. Anderson’s motion that
the works and town hall committee look into the possibility of staff working on Sundays.
Refuse expenditure
An increase in spending by the Metropolitan Refuse Disposal Committees is worrying the council. It was decided to write to the committee about this.
Riccarton will not approve further spending unless it is approved by most councils on the committee, nor does it now favour the raising of joint loans. Conditions disobeyed Two Riccarton firms have not complied with towmplanning conditions, the council was told. Cycle Salvage. Ltd. in Blenheim Road, was not allowed to display cycles on the concrete apron outside
the premises, said the chairman of the town-planning committee (Cr Anderson). The firm had been doing so. and notice telling it to stop had been sent, he said. Kessal Furniture, in Riccarton Road, was not allowed to have a retail shop or showroom, according to town-planning conditions. The firm did have a retail shop, and goods were being offered to the public. Cr Anderson said. It would also be sent a notice on townplanning conditions. Therapy pool A hydrotherapy pool, proposed by the Crippled Children Society, was approved in principle by the council.
