Dutch Govt loses majority
NZPA-Reuter The Hague Prime Minister Andreas Agt’s coalition of Christian Democrats and Liberals lost its narrow parliamentary majority in the Dutch elections yesterday. Semi-official results issued by the Dutch news agency A.N.P., with 99 per cent of the votes counted, gave the Government only 74 seats, jiist less than half of a new 150-seat Lower House and three fewer than in the old Parliament, The provisional outcome is expected to be confirmed when the Government, announces the official results next week. Mr van Agt, aged 50, nev-
ertheless seemed likely to play a key role in negotiations to form a new govern- . ment, since his Christian Democrats • replaced Joop den Uyl’s opposition ..Labour Party as the largest group in Parliament. . The Labour Party dropped ■nine seats to 44, four fewer than’the total for the Christian, Democrats, who lost one seat. ' The Left-of-Centre Democrats more than doubled their representation from eight to 17. They have rejected a purely Left-wing Government, and also a combination with the old Government, which will remain as caretaker until its successor is. formed.
