Salvage to start

PA Wellington Heavy anchors and ground tackle will be used to stabilise the grounded Pacific Charger today. A Wellington Harbour Board tug will tow a loaded barge to Baring Head, then the board’s pilot vessel will take over the task in the shallow waters near the ship. A spokesman for the salvage team, Captain Craig Harris, said yesterday that he expected that the heavy anchors and ground tackle chains — last used for the Wahine — would be at the grounded freighter by 9 a.m. todav.

"We want to get all this equipment laid while the good weather holds,” Captain Harris said.

The task ot taking BUU

tonnes of heavy fuel oil off the ship is expected to start today. The specially built causeway at Baring Head was ready and pumps were in position in the ship.
