Child care subsidy proposed

A 50 per cent salary subsidy should be provided for a temporary supervisor at the Sydenham Community Centre’s creche, said the Christchurch City Council’s community services committee yesterday. The subsidy would provide $625 for the supervisor this year. A staff report said there was a need for the council to provide financial aid and community work support for groups running community child-care facilities. Cr M. J. Glubb objected to

the subsidy. He said there ■ was insufficient supporting evidence for the council to help, and the Government should be giving such aid in the first place. “I almost violently disagree with Cr Glubb," said Cr H. A. Clark. That attitude would prevent the council from providing leadership for new projects in the community. The committee’s chairman, Cr D. J. Rowlands, said the proposal was “clearly in line with the councils child-care policy.”
