Jim Donald, the national rally champion, will have a golden opportunity to take the lead in this' year’s national championship when he starts as No. 1 seed in the second round in Southland on Saturday. Donald was beaten by a fellow Aucklander, Paul Adams, in the first round in Canterbury two weeks ago but Adams will miss the
Southland rally because of lack' of sponsorship. Alan Mitchell, a Feilding farmer, will probably be Donald’s main challenger; in the Foveaux Radio Rally, which will start, on Saturday afternoon and finish -bn Sunday morning after more than 600 km of high-speed driving on back-country roads, including ; one long specialstage through the infamous Hokonui Hills.
Even if Donald wins the event and Mitchell finishes second they will both have 30 championship points, as Mitchell .was- second in Canterbury while Donald was. fourth.' ...
