Rumania decision needed

PA Taumarunui The Scottish and New Zealand rugby unions will both have to make a decision in the near future about whether international matches against Rumania this year be accorded full test match status. Scotland is scheduled to play Rumania at Murrayfield on September 27 and the manager of the Scottish side in New Zealand, Mr Ken Smith, said that his personal belief was that the fixture should be treated as a full international.

“Rumania is a very strong rugby nation and has proved that with a recent win over France,” he said. Mr Smith was referring to Rumania’s 15-0 victory-over France last November at Stadion Giulesti, Bucharest, where the All Blacks’ match against Rumania will more than likely be staged in October.

Admittedly the French were without the great loose forwards, Jean-Pierre Rives and Jean-Luc Joinel, for the game but the win must have given the All Black coach, Peter Burke, something to think about. Rumania wants to establish greater playing contact with the main European rugby nations and the tentative itinerary for the Scottish tour involves three matches, the first on Wednesday, September 16The Rumanians have already played in Ireland and Wales.
