Naval probe over

PA Wellington The Navy’s evaluation team will arrive back in Wellington from Britain late next week. The team, led by Captain A. D. Nelson, has spent three weeks inspecting the 11-year-old County class light cruiser, H.M.S, Norfolk. The Norfolk, a possible replacement for the ageing frigate Otago, became available after publication of the “British Defence Review” last month.

A Navy spokesman said yesterday that Captain Nelson’s team would make recommendations to naval staff in Wellington. The Navy would then report to the Government, which has already turned down the Dutch Kortenaer class frigate for $250 million as a replacement for the Otago. The Minister of Defence (Mr Thomson) said three weeks ago that ne expected the all-up price of the Norfolk, including a refit, would be below $lOO million.
