Duck movements

Sir.—Reading with interest the article last week about the Avon ducks made me wonder if we are losing our pure mallards and greys to a mixed breed with the third one of black with a white patch on neck. This third lot only appeared a few years ago. Now one sees dark mallard drakes with white patches on neck as well as many other crosses. I see these in the Avon Loop area as I cycle past. If my memory serves me' correctly the not-so-pure strains of duck were once shot in the early mornings with a 410 shotgun. That would be in the late 19405. I think this third breed should be disposed of to keep the others pure. — Yours, etc., M. HODGSON. May 19, 1981.
