South African policies
Sir.—While it is accepted that the established pro-white South African Government is fundamentally deplorable, and guilty of horrendous atrocities towards the oppressed black majority in its country, its stance (policy of slow change) does merit one minor overt manifestation of our support — the promotion of the controversial Springbok tour. Actively to oppose the tour in -the manner advocated by responsible statesmen and church people, is to increase the rate at which the disintegration of the present leadership *is already occurring, when it is common knowledge that there is no single united political party capable of succeeding the prowhite Government should there be a major upheaval. This has been given as an excuse for prolonging the white rule in South Africa, and while I suggest that apartheid is an unacceptable evil, should its overthrow be hastened with reckless disregard for the country's national security during the period of transition, there will be ample opportunity for disguised Soviet intervention. — Yours, etc., J. DAVID McMILLAN. May 18, 1981.
