A 'smelly’ story
By
DAVID SWIFT
Now how can an.vone really take the name Smelly Feet seriously? “Well, it's mentioned in homes air over the country,” said the musician of that name, who has travelled from Auckland, and extensively through the North Island, to promote his e.p. It's a survival tour, because he made the record on a sort of easy payment plan. Five hundred pressings cost about $750. Smelly doesn’t have a licence to busk, he just gets on the street and starts playing.
Smelly (real name Brent) will play in and around Christchurch this week. He then hopes to return home to make some more records. He claims he doesn’t listen to music, because “there’s things happening right here in New Zealand that you can get into without having to buv overseas records.”
“I just want people to see what I’m doing. There’s lots of good bands in Auckland doing it themselves.” The only groups he admitted liking were the Herco Pilots,' an Auckland band who made their own record, and the now defunct English
group Swell Maps, whose “D.1.Y.” principles obviously appeal to him. On the “Real Records, Ltd” e.p., there are three songs. One is called “A Festering Toe.” One features a dustbin lid. There is also acoustic and electric guitar. Smelly Feet sings too; This is a true story.
