National “Food for Poland” appeal
PA Wellington “There is a constant lack of food — I beg for food for my undernourished children.” a desperate father writes from Poland in a letter to the Roman Catholic Metropolitan in New Zealand, Archbishop T. S. Williams. The Archbishop’s answer to that plea came yesterday when he launched a national “Food for Poland” appeal organised by the Polish Association in conjunction with the New Zealand Red Cross.
Poland is suffering a food shortage worse than anything known in Europe since World War 11.
Huge floods last year destroyed more than 40 per cent of the Polish harvest. Growing internal unrest, sparked by the food shortages, has made the position worse. Already the Polish community in New Zealand has raised more than $15,000 for the appeal. To assist in its launching Archbishop Williams has given $4OO. Food bought from money raised will be distributed in Poland by the Polish Red Cross Society.
Gifts can be made to any branch of the Bank of New Zealand. A special account has been opened by the Red Cross, called the “Food for Poland” appeal fund.
