Polish Party purged
NZPA-Reuter Warsaw A Polish Communist Party commission says 768 people have been expelled from the party in the last seven months, mostly for corruption and breaches of ethical and moral standards. Of those ousted, 282 had held leading positions, the commission said yesterday. It gave no other details. „ The commission was Set up last month to meet demands from party rank-and-file members for speedy investigation and action to uncover party leaders held responsible for Poland’s serious economic and political difficulties. The commission said the Prosecutor-General’s Office reported that it had investigated 108 people who had held administrative or party functions and 68 were in custody. A State watchdog body, the Supreme Control Board, said it was probing unspecified complaints against the former Communist Party leader, Edward Gierek, who resigned in September, and other party officials.
