China's numbers
China has announced that its population was 982.55 million at the end of 1980, just short of the round figure of one billion that Chinese officials normally use as a rough estimate. Figures released by the State Statistical Bureau said the 1980 figure was an increase of 11.63 million, or 1.2 per cent, over 1979. If the population continues to increase at the 1979-80 rate, the Chinese population will top one billion some time next year.— Peking.
