A wind-fall in wind

A performance on telethon is one of the future engagements for conductor Susan Hayes, aged 17, and French horn player Mark Dunford, aged 16, members of a wind octet set up by the Ham Wind Ensemble. The. ensemble has taken

advantage of the wide selection of wind players in the Christchurch area to establish two secondary school wind octets. The players range in age from 11 to 17. They are being tutored by an oboe and bassoon teacher, Ross McKeich, for the

telethon performance and demonstrations at local schools and at the Christchurch Teachers’ College. As well as giving performing experience, the groups are intended to teach the discipline and professional

approach of musicians. The limited amount of music available for wind octets has been supplemented by a work by Christchurch’s itinerant composer-in-schools, Dorothy Buchanan, entitled “Three Sketches for Wind Octet.”
